Defending champions Kelantan overpower Sarawak 2-0 in opener

KUCHING: Sarawak gave high flying visitors Kelantan a scare with high quality football before going down 0-2 to the Super League champions in their Malaysia Cup opener at the State Stadium last night.

Playing for the first time at night in State Stadium, and cheered by some 20,000 supporters Sarawak went on a very promising start in the first half.

Sarawak got it first chance in 2nd minutes, but central defender Hairol failed to connect to the corner taken by Dzulazlan.

In the 5th minute Sarawak got a second corner.

Clearance made by a Kelantan defender was intercepted by Sarawak midfielder who through the ball to Bobby Gonzales, who misfired.

Sarawak continued to attack and in the 15th minute, Bobby backheeled to Jaganathan, resulting into a freekick.

But again, the golden opportunity was wasted.

In the 21st minute Sarawak again made a counter attack, Zamri lobbed ball to Bobby, but the Sabahan decided to dribbled one too many and wasted the opportunity.

The game continued with both side exchanging attack but the game ended at 0-0 at half time.

Kelantan superiority were evident in the second half when they changed the game plan to punish the tiring Sarawak players.

The move paid off when Sarawak defenders made unnecessary errors resulting from Kelantan strikers solo effort.

Hairol Moktar backpass to Chun Keng Hong were robbed by Norshahrul. Norshahrul controlled the ball before coolly slot the ball home to give Kelantan the lead in 63rd minutes.

Norshahrul again created kelantan second goal when he side-stepped Sarawak defender before passing the ball to S Chanturu to beat Aidil Mohd.

Kelantan were fielding their regular first eleven plus Pahang on-loan striker, Mohd Azamuddin Mohd Akil.

Sarawak started Bobby as lone striker, backed by Jaganathan as attacking midfielder. On the right flank was Zamri Morshidi while Ashri Chuchu on the left flank. Sarawak engine room were manned by veteran Wong Sai Kong.

Sarawak defence line were marshalled by new signing Chun Keng Hong, assisted Shahrol Saperi and Mohd Hairol Moktar.

Playing on the left and right defence were Mazwandi Zakeria and Mohd Dzulazlan.

Coach Robert Alberts stick to his patience football formation, fielding five defenders, four midfielders and lone striker – obviously trying to absorb Kelantan lethal strike force lead by Malaysia top striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Azamuddin Akil.

Both teams made three substitutes in the second half.

Sarawak Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Muhammad Salahuddin and Malaysia head coach Datuk K Rajagobal were also present.
